    Be On Guard

"I will stand on my guard post and station myself on the rampart; and I will keep watch to see what He will speak to me and how I may reply…"

    Habakkuk 2:1

As a young mother, full time employee, ministry leader at church, Bible teacher and Choir director, needless to say my life was overwhelming on most any given day. I struggled for balance as I sought to have a "spotless house", after all didn't everyone else? I was always striving to be the perfect mother and cook on top of being the best in ministry I could be. With all the good I was doing I rarely had time to notice God throughout my day in the little things. Although my life was filled with good deeds, I missed God in my everyday life because of my many distractions. I would quickly pray before I darted out the door asking God to make me a blessing in the lives of others when I was way too busy to even notice "the others" that He would send my way. I had such a tunnel vision of accomplishment that I missed the highway of opportunity! Until one day God stopped me in my tracks by forcing me to slow down and look. He used the prophet Habakkuk to teach me a pattern for living that still sticks with me today.

The prophet Habakkuk lived in anticipation of what God would say. He would "keep watch to see what He would speak". He would not only keep watch but, he would stand on his guard post and station himself on the rampart. This man of God would begin his day with the eyes of a sharp shooter and plant himself on the rampart (wall) of his life with a purposeful heart not to miss God. Habakkuk desired above all things not to miss God in anything. He believed that there was no greater honor than to join God where He was working and be a vessel of servitude at His bidding. We are to be responders to God without hesitation, but in order to do that, we must be watchers first. We must take our stand every day with eyes wide open; with intentional living to be at God's disposal, ready in season and out of season.

Oh, how careful we must be when reacting to hurt. Quick to listen, and slow to speak. When we scroll through social media or click through different newsreels, we rarely witness quick listening and slow speaking. Before telling a friend they have hurt us, filter what happened through the following steps.
